3rd Xl open 2020 with a win

Following the updated Government guidance green lighting cricket from Saturday the 11th of July 2020 the club held an internal match at the rec on Saturday with a mix of first and second team players. The honour of the first external game following the resumption of cricket came to the third Xl with Ant Robinson taking a side to Redlynch & Hale CC. Traditionally Ant had to deal with multiple last minute drop outs but with plenty of people wanting to play cricket The Shrews had 11 on the pitch.

Shrewton won the toss and opted to field first with Joe Wood and Ollie Bate opening the attack. The Redlynch opening batsmen keeping it tight and not giving the shrews many chances to make inroads. Wood bowled 3, before being replaced by Will Holtby. Bate and Holtby bowled up to the first of two drink breaks on a very warm day with Redlynch on 36 for no loss after 12 overs.

The old saying is true though, drinks brings wickets, with both Redlynch openers falling in the 15th over to Holtby in the last over of his spell. Matt Murphy bowled an over following on from Bate who bowled very well for no reward. Matt Murphy striking in his only over trapping the Redlynch number 3, LBW. Young Charlie Murphy replaced Holtby with some spin and was given a full 8 overs. Despite not taking a wicket Charlie bowled well and was unlucky not to be rewarded.

Jim Nicholson bowled a spell from the other end but again went unrewarded for his efforts. By the second drinks break Redlynch had worked themselves up to 89 -3. After the second drinks break Lucy Nicholson came into the attack replacing her dad and Kenny Mundy took over from Charlie. It was in the 33rd over when the next wicket fell with Kenny taking the first of his 2 wickets, followed by Lucy taking her first wicket of 2020 and Kenny taking his second wicket and the last of Redlynch’s to fall. In their 40 overs Redlynch made 178 - 6 with Felix Gazzard top scoring with 44.

Following the break with no tea which followed the required guidelines Shrewton began their reply. The batting was opened with Joe Wood and Matt Murphy. The Shrews batsman making an aggressive start with Wood being bowled out for 12 in the 6th over with Shrewton on 39-1. Ollie Bate went in at number 3. At the first drinks break after the 12th over, Shrewton were at 57 for 1. Following drinks Matt Murphy fell in the 16th over scoring a very handy 36 and was replaced by Charlie Murphy.

Charlie batted resolutely with Ollie who was the next to fall in the 18th over, LBW scoring 17. Will Holtby replaced Ollie and made a quick fire 12, out caught and bowled. This was the last wicket to fall for Shrewton with Kieran McClure coming into batt at number 6 with Charlie still there. Kieran and Charlie were resolute at the crease whittling away at the target. Kieran retired on 44 bringing Kenny Mundy to the crease for the final onslaught.

Kenny and Charlie saw the Shrews home making 179 with 5 overs to spare. The match was played in great spirit with both teams socially distanced clapping each other off at the end of each innings. Next Sunday the 3rds will look to host Heytesbury and Sutton Veny at The Rec.
